Wee Sing Train [VHS] Overviews

Casey and Carter create a make-believe land, and then find themselves in it, riding a train and being guided by Cubby the Caboose and Chug-a-lug the Engine. On the entertainment bill are musical cowboys, dancing paper dolls, and a singing vegetable patch. Clunky, excessive, and sometimes poorly produced, this video will probably have some motion to small kids. --Tom Keogh

Wee Sing Train [VHS] Features

There has been a long train of thought related to early childhood development that all things should be age appropriate for children. But what is age appropriate in this century limits children in many ways. Your child can learn and enjoy much more music sophistication than you might think possible. Here is why and how to expand upon age appropriate music for your child.

What Is Truly Age Appropriate?

Wee Sing Train [VHS]

In many parenting circles children happily listen to music written just for them. There are many wonderful choices. Folk songs and new music composed with children in mind fill the Internet and stores devoted to children. Included in the musical selections might be Disney, Wee Sing, Sesame Street, Rafi, Barny, Mr. Rogers, and too many more to mention. All of these are loads of fun, filled with educational lyrics and rhythms that children do adore. When parenting your child, these are often some of the first choices that come to mind, and they are good ones because they include songs about all sorts of things that children enjoy knowing, or should know about the world, about reading and writing, about science and fiction, and you name it.

Raising Musical Children - What is Truly Age-Appropriate Music For Children?

No one would suggest that children not enjoy these typical children's products. But it might be valuable to consider that your child's ability to learn is high when young. And in fact, children from previous generations who did not have so many visual distractions from the Internet, TV, and computer games were often able to understand and retain much more information than we are today.

Famous child musicians such as Mozart were playing instruments and composing music at very young ages. Was Mozart really a musical genius? Probably. Does that mean that other children of his time were not musical? Not at all. It simply means that Mozart was raised in an environment that encouraged and supported his musicianship from an early age. Then, given similar present day circumstances, it follows that children of our time have the same capability to achieve in Mozart-like fashion.

Expanding the Age Appropriate Boundaries

Young children should be given the opportunity to listen to music that is not specifically labeled for children. Why? Because there is more music in the world that is wonderful, interesting, and written for children than could possibly be listened to in a lifetime. Children deserve the chance to hear it, rather than have their music be censored to only include the current offerings labeled as music for children.

In Disney's movie Fantasia classical music is the background for delightful animations. The music is illustrated as stories that reach our eyes and our ears. The pieces chosen are long, but nobody really minds, because the animation helps us to understand that music can tell stories, and we are entertained. Isn't it interesting that the people who saw Fantasia when it was originally released had attention spans that embraced the length of orchestral works? Why should it be any different today? Quite frankly, it should not be any different. We should approach our musical parenting as an opportunity to expand our children's ability to appreciate music, rather than limit it to For Children Only music.
